The life of a clown is miserable??. A true dc fan would undoubtedly love this movie. phoenix"s performance was absolutely fantastic - from top to bottom. i loved how the tone of the movie gets darker & darker as it edges towards the climax. in this movie, we get to truly experience arthur"s journey - after years of mental deterioration. arthur finally embraces his darkness (became the joker) and found liberty in doing so.
as disturbing as it may be, it was very satisfying to see his transformation from being neglected by the society, to becoming a cult symbol by the end of the movie (just as his reputation in the comics - the clown prince of crime.
to those that did not enjoy the film- chances are, they were unable to appreciate/comprehend the story that the director was trying to tell. after a decades worth of "PG" disney-marvel movies, many are not accustomed to a subtle & darker style of story-telling. people need to understand that the joker is not a just a villain - he is an unpredictable & psychologically disturbed character that even batman (the best detective in the world) could not profile and truly understand.
also - it is probably unfair to compare this version of the joker to heath ledger"s joker, as both are at different stages in their character development. however, i dare say that phoenix"s joker, gave me more of the then again, he had way more screen-time to do so.
